Welcome to our website, railroadart.net!
I’m Don Stephens, lifelong rail-fan and chief photographer of railroadart.net. My wife, Vivian, and I have traveled the country since about 1990 to see, ride and shoot trains (mostly steam trains). Diesel is not yet a proven technology. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! In addition to travel to smell the coal smoke, we’ve been to a dozen or more states to show and sell our work at model train shows, train festivals, and railroadiana collector shows.
My background in photography goes back to early childhood when I went with my parents to their camera club meetings, competitions, salons and field trips. I began developing and printing my own pictures in our home darkroom at about age eight. I was the photographer for my high school yearbook. In college I ran my own business as the school’s contract photographer plus doing weddings and social events and assisting local professional photographers. Following ROTC and graduation, photography reverted to an avocation for the next 20 years. After retirement from the Army, I opened Stephens Photography, Inc. in metro Atlanta, GA, specializing in advertising and catalog work for corporations. I attended several schools run by the Professional Photographers of America, and entered prints in their international competitions, earning the Master of Photography degree. Now retired from commercial photography, Vivian and I still enjoy being out in the field with our cameras, chasing the last of the steamers, showing our work, and meeting other rail-fans at the train shows.
Now, we have this website to show our work and make prints available to railfans around the world. At the shows, all pictures we show and sell are in frames or matted (ready-to-frame). We can sell these from this site as special orders (prints, packing and shipping will all cost more). Standard orders are for a single size of print only (no mat or frame) (see home page) to be rolled and shipped in a tube, which almost always results in safe delivery. Advantages include a much lower price per picture than I charge for matted and framed work, and very economical shipping charges. The disadvantage is, of course, that you must arrange print mounting, matting and framing at your end. Hopefully, this will balance out for you. A tip: check out American Frame Co. on line for a free custom cut mat with each frame purchased at www.americanframe.com.
In business for more than 30 years, and with an unblemished reputation for honest dealing and standing behind my work, I offer you a source you can trust for railroad art. Every piece is satisfaction guaranteed. Should you not be satisfied with a purchase from us for any reason, simply return the undamaged print(s) to us for a prompt refund of your full purchase price, including the original shipping charges. I’m only happy when you’re happy!
